Our first Stewardship Sunday was last weekend. We were asked to consider committing our financial support to the parish on a regular basis, which is the concept of tithing. It simply means giving a percentage of our income to the church to support our parish, school, and outreach efforts. Although tithing literally means “a tenth,” we can start with any percentage that God is calling us to give and then, as we grow in trust, increase that percentage over time.
Tithing isn’t a tax; it isn’t something we do in addition to everything else in our Christian efforts. It’s not an extra burden we impose upon ourselves. It is deeply integrated into the life of a Christian disciple. It’s just committing a portion of what we have, our blessings and the best we have, back to God to help our brothers and sisters. It’s about giving regularly what we can, according to our means, even if it’s not always convenient.
When we commit to tithing, it brings about a change in how we think about our financial contributions. Stewardship is not about giving to a particular need. Tithing means that our giving becomes a need for us to give and keep on giving. That’s how stewardship becomes a way of life for us. It’s like taking the first plunge in learning how to swim; it makes us gasp at first, but after the first few minutes we start getting used to it. It’s bracing and exhilarating. As Jesus said, give to Caesar what is his, and give to God what is God’s (Mark 12:17).
